Gran Fondo Strade Bianche 2025: An unforgettable experience!
There are moments in a road cyclist's life that you simply never forget. March 9, 2025, was one of those days. The Gran Fondo Strade Bianche, the legendary race through the beautiful, rolling landscape of Tuscany, exceeded all expectations and gave me an experience I can't compare to anything else. From the spectacular gravel sections to the breathtaking views of the landscape, this Gran Fondo was absolutely fantastic!
A weekend full of highlights
Even on Saturday, the day before the race, the atmosphere in Siena was simply incredible. The historic old town was a hubbub of people awaiting the professional race. It was a true spectacle to see Tadej Pogačar confidently win the race – a moment I'll never forget. The atmosphere was electric, and the tension in the air was palpable. But my own race was still to come, of course, and I could hardly wait to get in the saddle.
Start of the race: Fast and intense!
On Sunday, the time had finally come: the 2025 Gran Fondo Strade Bianche! With an 8:00 a.m. start, the race began directly from the beautiful old town of Siena. I immediately felt the intensity of the race – the first few kilometers were really fast. The group was hard to find, and it was a constant battle to maintain the right position without overexerting myself. But that's the beauty of races like this, isn't it? The challenge of pushing through, finding the perfect group, and then finding the rhythm that suits you best.
The first phase of the race was mostly on asphalt, and the transition to the legendary "Strade Bianche" (white gravel roads) came quicker than expected. And this is where things really got going! The gravel roads were absolutely insane. They took a toll on me, but the gravel sections are exactly what make the race so unique. The bumps, the shaking, the feeling of being truly "off the beaten track"—it was pure joy!
Nutrition: The turbo for the body
For me, as an enthusiastic amateur road cyclist, proper nutrition is paramount. I had prepared well in advance and had everything I needed for the race to maintain my performance and avoid depleting energy too early. The many small, extremely steep climbs and constant rhythm changes are no fun—especially when you feel the constantly changing conditions in your legs. But that's exactly what makes it so incredibly exciting!
I felt like I was really pushing myself. During the race, the scenery was simply breathtaking: the rolling hills, the green-yellow wheat fields, and the deep blue sky – all combined with the inimitable, dusty roads of the Strade Bianche. It was almost like riding through a painting! Every time I raised my head, I felt like I was in another universe – far away from the stress of everyday life.
Flat tires? No problem – thanks to tubeless tires!
Of course, as always, there were a few punctures, and I had to stop a few times in the group because other riders were struggling with flat tires. But I had my tubeless tires mounted – and what can I say? This decision more than paid off. No punctures for me, everything went smoothly, which is worth its weight in gold in a race like this!
The absolute top bike: Canyon Grail CFR
What made the whole experience even more unforgettable was my bike: the Canyon Grail CFR . This bike is truly a masterpiece of engineering! It combines lightweight design with incredible stability—especially on the rough gravel sections of the Strade Bianche, I felt like I was riding on a magic carpet. The frame geometry ensures excellent comfort and control, no matter how rough the terrain. Add to that the powerful shifting and braking systems—everything just worked perfectly. When I finally crossed the finish line after 5 hours and 31 minutes, I was simply overjoyed. The 138 kilometers were a true test, but it was also one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The Strade Bianche isn't just a race; it's a true adventure! The tough course, the beautiful scenery, the atmosphere—all of this makes this event a unique experience.

The 2025 Gran Fondo Strade Bianche was a true highlight of my road cycling career. A race that challenged me both mentally and physically, but also gave me incredible joy. The gravel sections were perfect, the scenery was breathtaking, and the atmosphere in Siena was simply magical.
